Morning Edition and Up First seek a dynamic broadcast journalist/reporter to help drive their new morning podcast.    

 

The successful candidate will have a passion for reporting out our evolving political ecosystem and the characters that inhabit it. S/he will have an engaging and dynamic on-air presence and apparent comfort with a live broadcast format, bringing politics to life through storytelling on-air and online. S/he will work closely and collaboratively with the Washington Desk, contributing to NPR's overall coverage of politics and policy and writing for (please use the apply button below).

 

We're looking for a background in covering political campaigns, Congress, and/or the White House, as well as a proven understanding and knowledge of general news /cultural topics. The successful candidate will have a talent for smart, insightful journalism delivered in a conversational, accessible style across all platforms.

 

Hitting tight deadlines in a demanding news environment is a must, as is self-discipline and the ability to collaborate effectively in a creative and committed team.

  • Conceives, proposes, plans, and researches ideas for program segments.
  • Gathers information and materials for program segments, on tape and otherwise (through interviews, press conferences and direct event coverage).
  • Develops news sources and keeps associated files.
  • Participates in show/podcast coverage planning.
  • Consistently participates in live interviews, setting the news agenda for a morning audience of over 14-million weekly radio listeners, as well as podcast subscribers.
  • In consultation with editors and producers, organizes, edits and produces material for program segments.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with the Washington Desk, contributing to NPR's coverage of politics and policy and writing for (please use the apply button below).
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

 

Required Experience for a Reporter:

  • At least three years' reporting experience covering politics or government.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, report and write stories of interest to a national audience.
  • Experience producing pieces and interviews for radio, digital and social audiences.
  • Ability to work quickly under deadline pressure. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.

Required Experience for a Correspondent (Reporter qualifications, plus):

  • At least six years' journalism experience, with a substantial experience in covering national politics.
  • Excellence in analysis and interpretation.
  • Demonstrated ability to break news.
  • Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of broadcast journalism - reporting, voicing, editing, producing audio pieces, use of microphones, recorders, computers and transmissions via ISDN lines, satellite phones and/or Internet.
  • Expertise in execution of sophisticated radio broadcast journalism, such as long-form features and documentaries.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with the public radio system, and live newsmagazine format, as well as podcasts and evolving digital audio platforms.
  • Experience producing on digital audio workstations.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
